Poetry from the Cabin — 02/02/2024

I have been asked to lead communion this week at church. I wrote this poem to accompany the service. It is based on 1 Corinthians 10:16–17:

16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ?
The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?
17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body,
for we all partake of the one bread.

This is a poem about our identity as sons and daughters of God—shared with all who proclaim the name of Jesus until He comes. The third stanza is based on Ephesians 3:14–21.

There Is One Bread

There is one bread, the body of Jesus
Unconfined, undefined by time or place
We all partake as one, for He’s with us
As one consider Christ with all the saints

Denominations, nationalities
All generations of men and women
The very rich and those in poverty
One cup, one loaf, one Church communion in

In love we comprehend with all God’s people
What is the breadth, and length, and height, and depth
And know the love of Christ—the Church’s steeple—
That points to heaven far beyond our strength

Hear Christ say, this is my body broken
And my blood shed, partake of Me as one
