Inspired by Chapter 4 of Eugene Peterson’s Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places

As bodies float down Rio Grande
Like children killed at Pharaoh’s hand
And Ukraine with cities leveled
Submerged in war and struggle
Taiwan under constant threat
Like in days when Ezra led
The Middle East is locked in war
As has often been before

But,
In history, in all its suffering
Our God has always been
Beckoning from our destruction
Back to wholeness and salvation
Beyond governments and battle lines
God has stood the test of time
He suffers too with us again
As when He was in darkness laid
And in darkness three days stayed
