Imagination is a serious aspect of who we are. It is not a flaw—it is part of how we bear the image of God.
At its best, imagination helps us discover what God is creating through us.
At its worst, it is capable of every sin of the physical body.
Far too often, imagination is rejected because of its tendency toward sin. But we seem to forget that our whole being has a tendency toward sin.
Rejecting all imaginings is like rejecting all pleasures simply because we’ve found sin temporarily pleasurable.
Abstinence and discipline are beautiful things, but they are rarely the final stop on the road to maturity.
If I reject all possessions, I will fail to mature in stewardship.
If I reject all companions, I will fail to mature in relationships.
Imagination is much the same—but the stakes may be even higher.
Rejecting possessions or relationships is a choice about what not to do.
But rejecting imagination is more like cutting out our eyes or ears—
We narrow the way we perceive and interpret all our experiences.
Redeemed Imagination Expands Our Vision
When we steward our imagination well, we begin to see beauty and meaning where once there was only stark reality.
Daily life becomes pregnant with the expectation of the miraculous.
Not because we are naïve—
But because we’ve truly seen the beauty of a sunset…
Or the power of a kind word said at just the right moment.
